Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

as every year, we have once again artistically alienated our own simulation results.

You will immediately notice that the finite element mesh of our Christmas model has turned out a little more turbulent this year.

At first glance, statics and turbulence seem to be a contradiction in terms, but, without claiming to be complete, there is much that connects them.

We all experienced and went through quite a turbulent year.

Once again we pay our condolences to the victims of natural disasters.

Even for us, it is still inconceivable in how short a time natural turbulences caused great devastation.

And so, full of humility, we have to admit to ourselves that even though we now even take the effect of „wind gusts“ into account in the design of pressure vessels and pipelines and we have invested a lot in improving our „tools“, we have had to learn once again that unfortunately not everything can (yet) be calculated and thus predicted.

Almost every day we hear about new simulations that investigate the turbulence that small „animals“, invisible to us, can (or could) cause, and yet we still can’t get our everyday life into „calm waters“.

What can we do?

Bury our heads in the sand?

Thomas Aquinas already said this more than 750 years ago:

For miracles you have to pray, for changes you have to work!

That is what we have done for you again this year and, among other things, we have often been able to analyse the vibration and fatigue strength behaviour of “flow induced” structures. On behalf of my staff, I would like to thank you all very, very much for this. It is nice that all the „turbulences“ from our point of view could not negatively influence the collegial and respectful cooperation with all of you.

And I can assure you: Despite the still unknown turbulences, you can also „calculate with us“ in the coming years, after all, we have been „storm-tested“ for twenty years now.

Well, the personal contact, the small talk  over a cap of tea or coffee has come up a bit short for me personally again this year. In addition to all the many problems and little issues, this is also part of my, and I hope also your, professional life. Therefore, I hope to meet you in person again in the New Year…..

….and if you want to „switch off“ for once, 50m behind our office the Agger flows over a weir, sometimes more and sometimes less turbulent… despite the turbulence a place to find peace and quiet, to simply pause and let your „soul dangle“….

Despite turbulent times, finding your („static“) peace is what we wish you all.

To put it in our jargon, enjoy stress-free days.

Stay healthy. Your „Simulants from the Agger Beach“.
